| Mythology inspired by experience |
‘Mediator’ is defined as a medium for causing or transferring (objects, information, etcetera)
a ‘go-between (CED)
In these works, birds inspire the mediation of the spaces between the earthly world and the realms of the ephemeral.
Ancient mythology, religious texts and folklore are universally rich in imagery of birds as ‘go-betweens’, living links between the earthly and the supernatural.
The roots of these works lie in a personal mythology inspired by experiences and encounters with birds over time, in particular the occupants of the South-Eastern Cape estuarine environment.
Past works touching on this theme include:
Artist’s Paradise – triptych (1995); Guardians of the Gorge (2002); The Gates (2003); Spirit of the Great Kei (2004) and Presence in Place (2006).
These works suggest a ‘mode of transportation’, a transcendence, an elevation. |
